Losing weight is one of the biggest challenges for millions of people around the world. A recent federal survey says that roughly 60% of all americans are overweight and that 1 in 4 people are obese and that the problem is worse than ever before.
Weight loss is defined as a decrease in overall body weight resulting from either exercise, diet or unknown involuntary circumstances such as illness.
One of the big misconceptions with losing weight is whether you are losing body mass (water, fat, muscle) or losing just body fat. Most people who go on a diet of some sort end up losing more than just fat which can cause more problems in the long run such as a slower metabolism due to lost muscle mass. The biggest culprits of this type of weight loss are crash and starvation diets that require very little calories or very little food choice and often last for only several days at a time.
Not only can fad diets make losing weight harder in the long-run, they can often make you feel tired and lathargic and even depressed. In the end, the majority of people struggle with the thought of eating because the diet is too strict and end up breaking the diet only to regain the lost pounds very quickly.
Here's a collection of possibly dangerous diets that are currently popular on the market and why:
The Atkins Diet (Low Carb or Ketogenic)
According to atkinsexposed.org, nutrition experts have warned that this hugely popular diet is a big health risk as well as being medically unsound.
There have so-far been no studies into the long-term use of a high protein and fat / low carb diet. One of the problems with this type of diet is the extra stress put on the kidneys from the excessive protein intake, which can lead to serious kidney damage and kidney stones.
Dr. Arne Astrup, an obesity expert, has found that problems such as headaches, either diarrhea or constipation and weakness in the muscles are most often found in people who follow the atkins diet than any other. This could indicate that this type of diet may be unhealthy in the long run. He also states that these side effects are consistent with carbohydrate deficiency, as the muscles and brain do not get enough sugar from carbohydrates in our food to maintain their normal and healthy function.
Other reported side-effects include:
- Bad Breath
- Leg Cramps
- Rashes
- Hair Loss
- Spotting
South Beach Diet
The south beach diet, created by Dr Arthur Agatston, is considered a clone of the atkins diet and according to Dr Joel Fuhrman, medical research has demonstrated that a high protein diet promotes atherosclerotic plaque build up which can cause heart problems in the future. This method of losing weight by losing, then gaining repeatedly changing your eating habits can lead to a premature death by promoting the deposition of plaque that causes heart attacks.
The Zone Diet
Like the diets above, you are asked to significantly reduce the amount of fruits, vegetables and grains you consume. According to weightlossinternational.com, eating fruit and veg regularly reduces the risked of cancer and heart disease and find it interesting to note that people who consume these types of foods are generally much leaner than those people who don't.
Other popular but questionable diets include:
There are potentially hundreds if not thousands more diets out there that either pose serious health risks or have questionable weight loss benefits. The best thing you can do is search for online forums where people discuss the type of diet you plan on undertaking and find out about all the the possible risks and dangers.
There are however, many weight loss programs that are based on sound nutrition and fitness principles. They are mostly geared towards changing bad habits or incorporating new lifelong ones rather than drastically changing your entire diet for a specific period of time.
Weight loss pills and other similar products have soared in popularity over the last several years due to the percieved ease of weight loss. There are also 2 different types of weight loss pills - prescription or over the counter medications plus the many different pills widely available online.
We'll first look at some of the popular pills that are available from your local pharmacy or physician and any possible side-effects associated with them:
Orlistat (Xenical)
This drug reduces fat absorption in the intestinal tract by inhibiting pancreatic lipase. This stops fat from being digested and entering in the bloodstream. Instead, it simply continues to pass out of your body. Orlistat was once prescription only, but is now widely available over-the-counter as Alli. The most common side effects of orlistat include: urgent bowel movements, flatulence, oily spotting on underwear, abdominal pain and many others.
Sibutramine (Reductil or Meridia)
This drug is classed as an anorectic (appetite suppressant) that causes a reduction in the desire for food. There are however many known side-effects including constipation, headaches, insomnia and increased blood pressure.
Byetta
This drug promotes a feeling of satiety and delays gastric emptying. Byetta is a analogue of the hormone GLP-1 which has been shown to be a deficiency in overweight people. Byetta is also only recommended for Type 2 diabetics.
Rimonabant
This recently discovered drug is known as a cannabinoid (CB1) receptor antagonist. This drug is claimed to reverse the metabolical problems associated with obesity as well as induce weight loss.
Symlin
Similar to Byetta, Symlin promotes a feeling of satiety and delays gastric emptying. Currently, it is also only approved for diabetics, however, there are tests currently underway on non-diabetic patients for potential treatment in the future of all people.
Metformin
Metformin is another drug that can reduce weight in type 2 diabetics.
The problem with these drugs is that they usually all have some side-effects and the effects of long-term use are still unclear for some. Here's a list of other medications and their possible health concerns:
- The following are all "speed-like" drugs that were or are meant only for short-term use (few weeks at a time) and had the problem of addiction: Bontril (phendimetrazine tartrate), Adipex-P, phentermine, Desoxyn (methamphetamine), Ionamin, Redux and Fen-phen.
- Fenfluramine (Pondimin and others) and dexfenfluramine were taken off the market in 1997 due to likely causing heart valve problems.
- Pyruvate is another that has been insufficiently studdied and the weight loss ability of the drug is still not established. It may however, result in limited amounts of weight loss in some people.
These are the types of products you can buy directly from the internet from worldwide sources. There is medical literature that shows there is no convincing proof that 10 very common weight loss pill ingredients actually work as described. It should be noted that you should view any product that claims significant weight loss with a high degree of caution. Here's a list of some of the more common ingredients:
Hoodia Gordonii
Probably the most popular non-prescription weight loss product available on the market right now. Hoodia is a succulent plant that is known to be used by native inhabitants of Africa, particularly near the kalahari desert to suppress the appetite while venturing out on long hunting trips.
The drug has not been approved by the FDA. One of the problems researchers ran into was that it was hard to remove other components other than just the active ingredient (P57) from the hoodia plant which was thought to causes problems with the liver. Other scientific research suggests that the doses provided on the market are insufficient to produce any real results.
Jasjit S. Bindra, PhD, from Pfizer Pharmaceuticals states, "Clearly, hoodia has a long way to go before it can earn approval from the Food and Drug Administration. Until safer formulations are developed, dieters should be wary of using it".
Green Tea
Another extremely popular remedy for weight loss is green tea and it's extract. Although there is no real proof yet that this remedy works for humans, there have been many tests done on mice with promising results.
The preliminary tests showed that mice that carried the obesity gene gained less weight overall and had less fat on their bodies. The same mice also showed less signs of having "fatty liver" disease. The doses used in the test would equal drinking roughly 7 cups of green tea a day.
It is believed that green tea can help to boost your metabolic rate which will cause you to burn more calories thus speeding up the weight loss process. However, this increased rate of metabolism is thought to be so small that the results will be unnoticeable.
Chitosan
This product is being promoted as a "fat absorber" that is supposed to attach itself to fats and oils in the intestines before they can be digested. This mixture of chitosan and fat are then expelled from the body rather than stored. Some scientists claim that unmodified chitosan would at best, remove only about 10 calories per day. Also there is the danger that it would absorb important minerals and nutrients required by the body for health.
According to Matthew D. Gades and Judith S. Stern of the University of California, who performed a 12 day study on chitosan, "This study indicates that there was a clinically insignificant increase in fecal fat excretion. Although the increase was statistically significant, it would take 778 days to lose the energetic equivalent of 1 kg of body fat even at the high dose of 10 capsules per day."
Carb Blockers
These popular products are supposedly meant to inhibit the body's ability to absord carbohydrates. There have been no studies performed by the medical communties to suggest that they have any effect on weight loss.
The next generation of carb blockers contain the ingrediet "Phaseolus Vulgaris" which is derived from the white kidney bean. This chemical has been shown in vitro studies to inhibit the digestive enzyme (alpha-amylase). This enzyme is responsible for complex carbohydrate digestion.
Phentramin-D
Another diet pill that supposedly increases your energy and suppresses your appetite and works as a stimulant. However, there is no scientific data on this drug to suggest that it promotes weight loss. Some of the side-effects of Phentramin-d include: irritability, sleeping diffuculties and a dry mouth.
Here's a large list of other questionable diet pills and products freely available online:
These patches are similar to a bandage and adhere to your skin and remain there usually for 24 hours, after which, you remove the old one and replace it with another. These patches are infused with many different ingredients, mainly herbs, which are supposedly meant to be absorbed into the body and increase the metabolism or reduce your appetite throughout the day.
Some of the most common ingredients found in these patches include: hoodia, Algae (Bladderwrack), Citrus aurantium extract (Advantra Z), 5-HTP, Fucus Versiculosus (a type of seaweed), Yerba Mate, Guarana, Chromium Picolinate and Garcinia cambogia (standardized for HCA - hydroxycitric acid).
The FTC (Federal Trade Commission) has increased it's attacks on many bogus weight loss claims by the manufacturers of these patches.
In two separate federal court actions, the FTC charged a manufacturer, Transdermal Products International Marketing Corporation, and the retailer, SG Institute of Health & Education, Inc., for falsely claiming that the skin patch causes substantial weight loss. The FTC complaints in both cases also challenge false claims that the patch or its main ingredient, sea kelp, has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FTC further alleged that Transdermal Products provided retailers with deceptive marketing materials that could be used to mislead consumers.
For those patches that contain iodine, the FDA warns that high doses and prolonged use can lead to iodine overdose and hyperthyroidism. They have seized millions of these patches from manufacturers and promoters and have deemed them unsafe to use.
The most common side-effect that people have noticed from using these patches are skin irritations. Those people who should not use patches include: Those who should NOT use the weight loss patch include the following; diabetics, pregnant women, people with a thyroid condition and those that have high blood pressure or heart disease.
Here's a list of questionable weight loss patches that are popular on the market today:
One of the fastest and safest known ways to burn stored body fat is to exercise or engage yourself in more activity. There is much debate over what type of exercise is best for weight loss. However, many experts will agree that cardio-type and weight training exercise are the best.
Cardio Exercise
Cardio (cardiovascular) exercise is considered on the most effective ways to burn calories and increasing the rate of your metabolism by raising your heart rate to between 65-90 percent of maximum.
Fitness experts consider cardio as an important component of overall fitness. Exercise that is cardiovascular in nature maximize the intake of oxygen by using large muscle groups over a sustained amount of time. Some of the most common forms of cardio exercise include: stair climbing, rowing, skating, aerobics, boxing, running, dancing, cycling and using a treadmill or elliptical trainer.
When it comes to burning stored body fat, morning exercise sessions before breakfast are optimal as your body will be forced to use stored body fat for energy.
Here's a list of known health benefits from performing regular cardio exercise:
- · Reduces the risk of heart disease
- · Promotes weight loss
- · Increased lung capacity
- · Increased fat burning rate
- · Reduces blood pressure
- · Helps prevent diabetes
- · Speeds up metabolism
- · Reduces stress
- · Strengthens the immune and cardiovascular systems
Weight Training
Studies have shown that weight training can stimulate the metabolism for up to 24 hours after a workout. On top of that, the newly created muscle tissue will also cause the body to need and burn more calories each day just for maintenance.
Weight lifting is a great way to firm and tone your figure and to minimize muscle loss while dieting.
Weight training usually takes place at your local gym because of the great variety of equipment and workout routines they have and the personal assistance and training that they can offer. However, many people are now opting for home fitness equipment that can be bought quite cheaply seconhand.
Walking
Walking is one of the easiest types of exercise and it can be done just about anywhere. Get into the habit of parking a little further from your office or supermarket, take the stairs instead of the elevator or just make an excuse to walk wherever you need to go. One of the best motivators for walking more each day is to go out and buy a pet dog so that you have a good reason to go for your daily walk.
Try to incorporate walking into your daily schedule early in the mornings or maybe even during your lunch break. Remember to take a pair of tennis shoes with you so you can walk around the block after eating a healthy lunch. This is also a great way to clear the mind if you happen to have a stressful job.
Some of the benefits to walking include better sleep, stress reduction and lower body toning.
Studies done in Sweden have showed that after one hour's walk, the activity of the a fat-breaking enzyme called "hormone sensitive lipase" is increased and retains it's fat-breaking activity for another 12 hours afterwards.
Many people believe that the metabolism is an actual body part or organ that influences the digestive system in some way. Actually, the metabolism is not a particular body part, it is the process by which food is converted into energy in the body. You have most likely heard the phrase "metabolic process" used synonymously with the term metabolism, and that's because the literally mean the same thing.
As I mentoined above, metabolism is the name given to the process of transforming food (eg. nutrients) into body fuel (eg. energy). The body will then use this energy to perform a vast array of functions essential for life.
It should be noted here that when we refer to the metabolic process, it is not actually just one function, but actually countless functions that take place inside of our body's. Every single second numerous chemical processes are taking place through metabolism, or metabolic functioning.
Metabolism is known as a harmonizing process, because it manages to critical body functions that are almost opposites, which are: Catabolism and Anabolism.
Anabolism is the process of creating new cells and body tissue. Each moment, our body is creating new cells to replace old or dysfunctional ones. On the other hand, catabolism is the process of breaking down cells and tissue into energy that the body can use.
If you are morbidly obese and have previously tried to change your diet and lifestlyle to lose weight without success, one option for you is weight loss surgery.
Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass Surgery
Surgery options will most likely include a process to restrict food intake or disrupt the digestive process by stappling off a section of the stomach so that it becomes non-functional. This technique is known as gastric bypass or stappling.
This type of surgery is the most common bariatric operation performed within the United States and is also the most successful.
Advantages:
- "Dumping syndrome" if chocolates or sweets are eaten
- Long and successful track record
- A good option for those with a sweet tooth
- Results are usually a little better than a gastric band
Disadvantages:
- Recover time is a little longer
- Increased risk due to open surgery
- Permanent
- Staple line leak
- Non-reversible
- Small weight regains of around 10-20 percent after 2-5 years
- Nutritional supplementation is required
Lap Band Surgery
A lap band is a restrictive device that gets implanted via bariatric surgery and is mainly for those who have a BMI (body mass index) of 40 or more. The band itself is an inflatable silicone device that gets placed around the upper portion of the stomach.
The purpose of the band is to creat a small pouch at the very top of the stomach that can hold a small amount of food. As this pouch quickly fills, it slows the passage of the food to the lower stomach. Because the upper part of the stomach becomes full, it sends a message to the brain that the "entire" stomach is full when in reality only a small part of it is.
This helps a person to feel satisfied after smaller meals and helps the person to be hungry less often which will lead do a decrease in weight.
Potential complications:
- Regurgitation of non-acidic food from the upper pouch, also known as PBing (Productive Burping).
- Gastritis
- Ulceration
- Erosion - The band may slowly pass through the stomach wall and cause serious complications.
- Slippage - A problem where the lower part of the stomach may prolapse through the band causing an enlarged upper pouch.
- Band placement - (too low or high on stomach) - Extensive vomiting during the early postoperative period - This complication can be caused by lack of experience of the surgeon. Patients must undergo a second operation to reposition the band.
Benefits:
- Low mortality rate: only 1 in 2000 versus 1 in 250 for Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery
- Surgery is completely reversible: stomach will return to normal after the band is removed
- Adjustable without surgery
- No stapling or cutting of the stomach
- Speedy recovery
- Shorter hospital stay
- No malabsorption issues (the intestines are not bypassed)
- Fewer life threatening complications (see table above)
Many of the important factors when it comes to weight loss including the metabolism and appetite operate more efficiently if there is an adequate supply of essentail vitamins and other minerals and nutrients. Many deficiencies can be corrected simply by taking a quality multivitamin daily.
Vitamins
Some of the most important vitamins for weight loss are the B-Group Vitamins and Vitamin C.
Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid)
Vitamin C has many health benefits including assisting with the proper conversion of glucose into energy within the cells. Sources of Vitamin C include: Cabbage, kiwi fruits, blackcurrants, broccoli, brussels sprouts, lemons, green peppers, strawberries and oranges.
Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin)
Vitamin B2 is required for the normal function of the thyroid and metabolism. Some of the best natural sources of vitamin B2 include: Leafy green vegetables, eggs, almonds, milk, hard cheese, liver and kidney and wheatgerm.
Vitamin B3 (Niacin)
Similar to B2, Vitamin B3 is also essential for normal thyroid function and hormone production. Vitamin B3 is part of the GTF (glucose tolerance factor) which gets released each time the blood sugar rises. Some good sources of Vitamin B3 include: Eggs, chicken, mackerel, wheat bran, liver, wheatflakes, oats, turkey, meat, salmon, barley, tuna, brown rice, cheese and dried fruit.
Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid)
A deficiency of Vitamin B5 will interfere with our ability to metabolize and utilise fat. Vitamin B5 is also important for energy production and assists the function of the adrenals. Sources of Vitamin B5 include: Wholegrain bread, beans, wheatflakes, liver and kidney, nuts, poultry, wheat bran, wheatgerm, oats, eggs, molasses, barley, green vegetables and meat.
Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine)
Vitamin B6 is needed to regulate the production of thyroid hormones. A list of good food sources of Vitamin B6 include: Eggs, brewer's yeast, brown rice, poultry, wheat bran, mackerel, wheatgerm, oats, cabbage, sardines, dried fruit, avocado, bananas, molasses and beef.
Choline
A component of Vitamin B complex, choline is not considered a real vitamin as it can be made in the body by the liver. Choline is necessary for efficient fat metabolism. A choline deficiency will lead to fat becoming trapped inside the liver. Good food sources of choline include: Peanuts, beef heart, lecithin, wheatgerm, beef liver, cauliflower, cucumber and egg yolks.
Inositol
Just like choline, inositol is a component of the vitamin B complex and can be created inside the body. Inositol and choline combine to assist in the metabolism of fat. Sources of inositol include: Wheatgerm, lecithin, beef heart, soy, beef liver, citrus fruits, nuts, wholegrains and eggs.
Minerals
Just like vitamins, certain minerals also play a function in bodily proccesses such as appetite, metabolic
rate, the blood sugar level and the metabolism of sugars and fats. The following minerals
play a part with weight management and some co-operate with one another, so it's important
not to signle out any "one" particular mineral or vitamin. Here's a list of some of the more
common minerals associated with weight loss:
Chromium
Chromium is essential for the proper metabolism of sugars. If there is insufficient chromium, insulin becomes less effective in the regulation of blood-glucose levels. For this reason, chromium can help to reduce hunger and control food cravings. Some food sources of chromium include: Whole grain bread, liver, egg yolks, hard cheese, molasses, beef and fruit juices.
Calcium
There have been clinical studies done that demonstrated a positive relationship between weight loss and calcium intake. These studies have indicated that by increasing your calcium intake to the equivalent of two dairy servings daily may reduce the risk of becoming obese or overweight, perhaps even as much as 70%.
It would also be worth remembering that low calorie and fat free milk contains an equal amount of calcium as it's full fat counterparts. This also holds true for reduced fat cheeses and low fat yogurt.
Zinc
Zinc is a mineral that helps to regulate the appetite. It is also needed for the correct functioning of certain hormones such as insulin. A deficiency of zinc is very common amongst smokers, some vegetarians, heavy drinkers, those with a chronic illness and those on very low calorie diets that contain very little nutrition. Some good sources of zinc are: Chicken, lean lamb or beef, eggs, shellfish, brazil nuts, herring, lentils, wheatgerm and almonds.
Manganese
Manganese is needed to help regulate the metabolism of fat and blood-glucose levels. It is also needed for healthy thyroid function which itself is needed to maintain normal weight. Some good food sources include: Leafy green vegetables, tea, oatmeal, wheatgerm, spinach, oatgerm, split peas, pineapple and nuts.
Foods to Stay Away From
Just as there are beneficial foods that aid weight loss, there are bad ones too that can cause you to gain weight. If you are trying to lose weight, you should stay away from the following: White flour foods such as bread, buns, pizza, crepes and pancakes, refined white sugar products such as: sodas, candy, ketchup and icecream, and stimulants such as: coffee, cigarettes, alcohol, spices, diet pills and drugs.
There are many weight loss programs available now that provide people with everything they need to lose weight including support for exercise and the mental hurdles of weight loss as well as the balanced food for all meals and snacks. These types of programs are considered ideal for people who would like to slowly and safely lose weight. A program that is easy to maintain will likely lead to more success. The problem with crash dieting is that they are so strict or severe that people can only tolerate the diet for several days.
Many of these programs provide the ability to customize the plan to suit your lifestyle or food preferences. The other benefit is that over time you learn healthy lifestyle habits that will help you to keep the weight off in the long-run rather than learning a few "tricks" to burn off fast quickly in a couple of days but can result in the dreaded "yo-yo" effect. Here's an overview of some of the more popular weight loss programs on the market today:
Jenny Craig
Jenny Craig is most probably the most well-known weight loss program today, closely followed by weight watchers. One of the services they offer is their Jenny Direct® program, that gives you their personal service and home-delivered food as an alternative to coming in to one of their centers.
The food, known as Jenny's Cuisine™, is usually shipped to you in 2 or 4 week increments via Fed Ex and is considered perfect for those who have a busy schedule and travel frequently or if you live too far from a Local Centre.
The amount of weight you will lose will vary from person to person, but average results see people losing between 1 and 2 pounds per week. As stated on their website, the results vary due to individual weight history, frequency/level of physical activity, body composition, and motivation among other factors.
Weight Watchers
The Weight Watchers Satisfaction plan™ is based on their "Four Pillars" approach to weight loss which include a supportive environment, healthy habits, exercise and food choice. The nutrition and lifestyle principles they teach you are intended to be used for the rest of your life to manage your weight.
Weight Watchers now have an online program that lets you do everything from home including cooking your own meals. They provide you with all the recipes and tools to begin losing weight.
LA Weight Loss
Similar to Jenny Craig, you start by making an appointment at one of their centers to develop a customized menu plan for you. Then you will make weekly visits to the center or with your trained counselor who encourages and coaches you. They will help to guide you with your food choices and activites.
As with Weight Watchers, The LA program has it's own food range to satisfy any food cravings you may get called LA Lites™. As stated on their website, LA Lites and their other products were designed to help you break the cycle of snacking, cravings, and gaining weight.
This method of support increases the chances of a person staying on with their weight loss goals by providing the motivational aspect many people need. As with the other 2 programs mentioned above, you have to remember to have realistic goals as the weight will slowly come off and you can't expect to get slim in only a couple of weeks.
Other online programs and centers worth mentioning here are:
Meal replacements are considered any formulated food that, in itself, can replace one or more meals daily.
There have been clinical trials that showed meal replacement can be an effective and safe way to lose weight if used as only a part of an overall nutrition and exercise program. There are some questions however, about the long-term effect and safefty of these meal replacement programs and products.
Partial meal replacement is the most commom, which means only 1 or 2 meals are replaced each day, with at least one normal meal consumed daily.
Meal replacements are becoming more popular today as there have been many technological advancements that have overcome some of the problems encountered with meal replacement in the past. These include:
1. Advances in the technology of food, which allows for more complete and nutritionally balanced mixes.
2. The problem of gaining weight back after discontinued use is being overcome by better training of clinicians and many reputable meal replacement products are part of a broader dieting program that offers sound nutritional education.
Some of the most popular meal replacement products on the market right now include:
Over the last decade, natural and alternative remedies for a whole assortment of diseases have become popular. This has not been more true than in the weight loss industry. There are literally thousands of different products available that contain all natural ingredients. The only problem is that the promoters of these products are known to make some pretty wild claims about their product and have no scientific data or evidence to back up their statements.
This does not however, mean that some don't work as there are also thousands of online forums where discussions about certain herbs or ingredients are conducted and tested by hundreds of people worldwide. This is something you will have to research on your own, but like with any product, be wary of any exaggurated claims.
Although results can vary wildly, these methods of weight loss are generally quite safe to try with very little to no side-effects. Here are some of the more common natural rememdies for weight loss:
Coconut Oil
Many users of this oil claim that it provides a feeling of satiety if eatin with meals. Advocates of the fats found in coconut oil also state that people tend to eat more carbodydrates than they need because they don't eat enough of the right fats with meals.
Coconut is a rich source of MCT's (Medium Chain Triglycerides). It is these MCT's that are claimed to give coconut oil it's weight loss properties. They are said to increase the metabolic rate by promoting thermogenesis.
Thermogenesis is simply, the process of heat production in organisms which requires energy thus increasing the base metabolic rate.
It is said that pigs that are fed with vegetable oils, that primarily contain LCT's (Long Chain Triglycerides), will tend to put on weight and produce fattier meat whereas if they are fed coconut oil, they will become leaner.
There are however, some studies that have been done to support the link between MCT's and thermogenesis by the Department of Pediatrics at Vanderbilt University. The study was done with 10 male volunteers who were overfed (150% of required energy) via a liquid diet formula that contained 40% fat as either LCT or MCT. The patients were then studies over a week on each of the diets in a crossover, double-blind design. These were the results: The results show that excess energy from the MCT diet stimulated thermogenesis to a higher degree than the LCT diet. This increased expenditure of energy was most likely due to lipogenesis within the liver and provided some evidence that an excess of energy derived from MCT's is stored with a lowered efficiency than excesses derived from LCT's.
Hypnosis
People with weight or other problems are increasingly turning to hypnotherapy as a means to solve their problem. We are yet to completely understand the nature and power of the human mind, however, there are many people who are trying to do just that. If you have tried all of the conventional methods to lose weight and don't seem to be getting any results, you might want to consider hypnotherapy.
Although hypnosis is not seen as something that will cause you to drop weight on it's own, but if you find yourself a counselor who's qualified, you will be given advice about sensible eating and the importance of regular exercise.
Hypnosis is seen as a tool that can help you to get more control over your own life which comes down to factors such as choosing the foods you eat daily and creating time and feeling motivated to exercise.
There are many hypnosis for weight loss audio and CD's available online that don't require a visit to a therapist and can be done in the privacy of your own home whenever it suits you.
Some hypnosis programs claim to deal with the emotional and psychological reasons for some people being overweight. It is also used as a tool to help you break old habits and to replace them with healthier ones that will help to facilitate your weight loss.
Saunas
With the advent of portable saunas that use F.I.R (Far Infrared) heat instead of steam, buying a sauna for home use has become economical for just about everybody. The question remains however, do they burn many calories?
While some websites state that you can burn just as many calories in 30 minutes as you would rowing, others say that any weight lost during a sauna is minimal or even temporary, as all the fluid you lose sweating is soon replaced.
Other than directly burning calories, saunas are supposed to aid weight loss by helping to remove or detox fat-soluble toxins and heavy metals that can interefere with the metabolism causing imbalances. Some claim that these fat stored (lipophilic) toxins need to be removed if drastic weight loss is to be accomplished.
Health experts feel that using a sauna is not as effective at burning calories as spending the same amount of time on an aerobic activity such as swimming or cycling.
For anyone who need to lose a lot of weight, you should only consider the sauna as a tool for building health and helping to remove any toxins that get released from the fat cells as you are burning them off.
Chakra Meditation
Chakra is a Sanskrit term meaning circle or wheel. According to yoga philosophy, there are seven major chakras within the body with each one being associated with different endocrine glands and organs and also with personal or spiritual qualities.
Chakras are not actual physical structures that you can see, rather they are energy centers that according to spiritual philosophy, absorb energy from our environment, such as the earth and sun, then transform these energies and provide them to the body. This flow of energy is said to effect our thoughts and feelings and a blockage in any of the chakras can lead to physical and mental ailments.
The chakra most associated with weight loss is the first or "root" chakra. Any imbalance with this first chakra is said to lead to potentially lead to problems such as obesity and a tendency to overeat.
The root chakra is connected with the issue of physical survival, security and the feeling of "having enough". A blockage in the root chakra energy can lead to fears related to your survival or that you are lacking and can cause you to gain weight or overeat.
Laxatives
Laxatives are used to increase the activity of the bowels. To lose weight, people consume large doses of laxatives which causes any food eaten to get expelled from the body with minimal absorption of fats and other nutrients from the food if used for extended periods of time.
One of the more popular weight loss laxative products on the market is known as Dieter's Tea or Slim Tea etc. Anyone considering using one of these products should thoroughly research the ingredients and be aware of all the side-effects and possible health hazzards they might pose.
Other than just losing weight, some of the side-effects from taking laxatives for prolonged amounts of time can include: Damage to the GI tract, stomach crams, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, fainting, dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, rectal bleeding, pain and constipation and can even lead to death in severe cases.
It is recommended by health experts that people should not be fooled or tempted into using these types of products that can cause serious harm to the body.
Fiber
Fiber is the part of plants, vegetables, fruits, beans and grains that is undigestible. Fiber is not found in meats or other animal based foods. Fiber comes in two forms: soluble and insoluble. The soluble type is able to disolve in water within your colon, creating a gel-like substance that helps to soften the stool and slowing down the emptying of the stomach which can allow for better digestion and helping you to feel fuller for longer which can effect the amount of food you eat while trying to lose weight.
Soluble fiber has also been credited with the ability to lower blood cholesterol.
